Ahmed Mater, a trained medic, is an important artist and therefore cultural commentator in the Middle Eastern context, more specifically in relation to contemporary Saudi Arabia. His artistic practice often handles complex collective experiences, which while acting as a vessel for memory, often cause the uncovering of personal histories and become a catalyst for the remembrance and registration of these stories. His work casts a wide net in terms of themes, touching on historical, geographical and actual topics that are emphasized by his direct and precise conceptual works. With his work, Mater therefore imagines likely outcomes for a place of unique influence in religious, social, economic and political realms. He works frequently with photography, film, sculpture and performance, documenting wider changes and communicating the effect of such changes on individuals, local populaces and the global community .
