Susana Pilar is among the more than 80 artists that have been invited to exhibit and she will bring a new performance titled 'UNITED' to this year’s edition of the Berlin Biennale. This performance deals with the meaning and symbolism of hair for women with afro hair. Historically, afro hair provided ways to escape slavery for the artist’s ancestors, providing storage for seeds and valuable assets that slaves would use in their post-slavery future. The performance will invite black women to come to Berlin to participate by joining their hair braided to each other to make a 2.6 kilometre human line, personifying the sense of unity the artist wants to communicate through this performance.
