Shilpa Gupta: exploring how places, people and objects are defined

Shilpa Gupta’s works unravel how human actions are subject to a range of external and internal biddings, from socio-political constructs, technology, or the play of the human mind. The synaesthetic nature of her work is rooted in growing up in the post-liberalising, post-riots dense city of Bombay/Mumbai in the 1990’s, which shaped her interests in forms of projection - be it the burgeoning media or political propaganda, and their impact on inter-relationships within communities, and the subsequent loss. Shilpa Gupta works with the everyday - be it found objects, video, interactive installation and performance, modifying and reworking them, to reveal our assumptions. Sometimes these are extended into participatory exchanges facilitating active experiences that involve the viewer. Exploring how places, people and objects are defined, her works stimulate in the viewer, an assessment of place and belonging.
